Choosing a cabin bag for a South African flight starts with two checks: the airline's size limit and the weight of the fully packed bag. A “travel bag” or “20-inch suitcase” name does not establish airline compliance. This guide compares FlySafair, LIFT and SAA economy allowances and shows how to check bags from our range.
FlySafair, LIFT and SAA cabin bag limits
| Airline | Main cabin bag dimensions | Economy weight allowance | Small additional item |
|---|---|---|---|
| FlySafair | 56 × 36 × 23 cm | One main bag, up to 7 kg | One handbag or slimline laptop bag, no larger than 40 × 15 × 20 cm. |
| LIFT | 56 × 36 × 23 cm | One main bag, up to 7 kg | One handbag or slimline laptop bag, no larger than 40 × 15 × 20 cm. |
| SAA | 56 × 36 × 23 cm | One main bag, up to 8 kg | One small handbag or slimline laptop bag, no larger than 30 × 40 × 10 cm. |
Check the linked airline policy and your booking before departure. Allowances can change and vary by fare, aircraft, route or connecting carrier. These figures do not establish compliance with Airlink, CemAir or another airline.
Cabin bag and personal item are different allowances
A backpack that fits the main cabin dimensions may still exceed the small personal-item allowance. For example, our Minimalist Commuter Backpack has listed dimensions of 31 × 12 × 42 cm. Those measurements are within 56 × 36 × 23 cm when oriented appropriately, but exceed FlySafair and LIFT's 40 × 15 × 20 cm personal-item limits and SAA's 30 × 40 × 10 cm small-item dimensions. Do not assume it can be carried as an additional under-seat item.
Compare listed bag dimensions before buying
The following products were in stock when checked on 9 October 2026. Prices and availability can change; the linked product page has the current details. The measurements below come from the product specifications, rather than an airline fit test.
| Bag | Listed dimensions | Listed empty weight | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unisex Gym & Travel Duffel — R595 | 45 × 22 × 21 cm | 910 g | Within the main-bag dimensions above on paper; measure again when packed and check weight. |
| Monogram Sports Duffel with shoe compartment — R480 | 47 × 23 × 30 cm | 800 g | Within the main-bag dimensions above when oriented appropriately; allow for packed bulges and handles. |
| Minimalist Commuter Backpack — R750 | 31 × 12 × 42 cm | 1.08 kg | Compare against the main cabin allowance; do not treat it as a guaranteed personal item. |
| Expandable Travel Duffel — R595 | 44 × 23 × 41 cm | 910 g | The listed 41 cm side exceeds a 36 cm cabin dimension. Confirm the packed measurements with the airline or use checked baggage. |
Four checks before heading to the airport
- Measure the packed exterior. Include pockets, handles and wheels; do not rely on capacity in litres.
- Weigh the whole bag. The empty bag, clothes, laptop and accessories all contribute to the limit.
- Check the second item separately. An under-seat laptop bag or handbag has its own conditions.
- Recheck after expanding. Extra capacity can change the dimensions and may require checking the bag.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take a duffel bag as carry-on in South Africa?
A duffel can be suitable if the fully packed bag meets your airline's size, weight and item-count rules. Soft fabric does not exempt it from measurement.
Is every laptop backpack a personal item?
No. Compare its exterior measurements with the airline's small-item allowance, which can be smaller than its main cabin bag limit.
Do these bags ship nationwide?
We ship across South Africa. Orders are generally processed within 1–2 business days; estimated courier transit is 1–3 working days to main centres, 3–5 to regional areas and 5–7 to outlying areas. Orders of R750 or more qualify for free delivery across South Africa; shipping is R100 below R750. Check our shipping and delivery information and the rate shown at checkout.
